As its official name suggests, this emoji shows a face with an open mouthed frown, very occasionally with upturned eyebrows. It’s quite frequently used across social media and in private messaging, and is used to convey shock or astonishment of an unpleasant or unexpected nature. It almost exclusively used in negative circumstances, and is unlikely to be found in a conversation which contained good news. It might be used on hearing that a best friend has broken up with their significant other, or in a slightly exasperated way, if you’ve just discovered you’re being given extra papers to work on over spring break. Confusingly, on some platforms it’s said to look like it’s yawning, so remember: context is everything!
